Eisen | Anemia in men with Hb below 13 g/dl – normal values 13 to 18 g/dl
Anemia in women: Hb less than 12 g/dl and normal values between 12 and 16 g/dl |
Iron is one of the most important trace elements responsible for the formation of hemoglobin, the red blood pigment.
The body binds about 70% of iron to hemoglobin and 12% to myoglobin, the muscle pigment. 18% iron is stored in hemosiderin or ferritin. In order to determine an existing iron deficiency, four clear laboratory values must be available. Serum ferritin, C-reactive protein, Hb levels of blood volume and transferrin saturation. Pregnant women have a higher need for iron, the Hb value should never drop below 11 g/dl. |
